The Application of Psychoanalytic Concepts to Clinical Work with  Children and Adolescents

This series will include eminent Psychoanalysts speaking about their work.
 
Judith Edwards will be in dialogue with psychoanalysts: Kathryn Pugh and Fatima Martinez Del Solar.

Judith Edwards, PhD MACP, is a consultant child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapist who worked at the Tavistock Clinic for 35 years. Internationally published and a past editor of her professional journal, her Selected Paper, Love the Wild Swan, was published in Routledge’s world library of Mental Health. Her latest book ‘Grandmother Land’ was published by Karnac 2023.

Summary

On being dropped and picked up: Adopted Children and their internal objects describes work with a 6-year-old adopted boy, where the primary disillusion of his neonatal experience was reworked in his adoptive placement.

Names have been changed to protect confidentiality while retaining meaning.

Note: given as a paper in Rome 1999 then published in a shortened version in Hindle and Shulmans Routledge book 2008 the emotional experience of adoption: a psychoanalytic perspective.
