John Steiner, MD. Training and Supervising Analyst of the British Psycho-Analytical Society.
In 2007 he was invited by the Spanish Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy to lecture on the challenges of working with narcissistic patients, further providing a supervision of material presented by a member of the AEPP.
Steiner provided clinical workshops and contributed to the panel discussions of the 99th Annual Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) held in Washington D.C. in 2010, focusing on specific problems in clinical listening.
Following in the footsteps of a distinguished list of psychoanalytic scholars, Steiner was invited to give a formal lectureship to the APM (the Association of Psychoanalytic Medicine) at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research in 1999. He has a long-standing affiliation with two analytic study groups in New York, where he presents clinical seminars annually. In 2011 he presented a paper at the Rita Frankiel Memorial Lecture entitled, ‘The Anxiety of Being Seen: Narcissistic Pride and Narcissistic Humiliation’ to the New York Psychoanalytic Society.
He was welcomed as the Keynote Speaker at the 24th Annual Melanie Klein Lectureship of the Psychoanalytic Centre of California (PCC) held in Los Angeles in 2013, where he spoke on Seeing and Being Seen: Emerging from a Psychic Retreat as well as Confrontations and Enactments in Analysis.
In 2013 he would present clinical material on the analysis of difficult patients in a dialogue with Ron Britton to the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of Rio de Janeiro (SBPRJ).
Steiner has been teaching in Stuttgart for a number of years, most recently in June 2014 where he was involved in a workshop organized by the German Psychoanalytic Association to mark the occasion of his eightieth birthday. The event was held at the Robert Bosch Hospital, with lectures on the treatment of Borderline patients and ‘The Conflict Between Mourning and Melancholia’.
In May 2015 John Steiner will hold a workshop in Krakow, organized by the Jagiellonian University and the Hanna Segal Institute for Psychoanalytical Studies, and will conduct a lecture on ‘The Repudiation of Femininity and the Reluctance to Relinquish Omnipotence’.
