Dr. Jonathan Sklar is a Fellow and Senior Training Analyst in the British Psycho-Analytical Society.
He has a particular interest in teaching the work of Ferenczi, Balint and the Independent Tradition. In particular re-theorizing trauma and understanding clinically forms of regression .
One of his particular responsibilities in the role of Vice President of the European Psychoanalytic Federation has been to teach candidates and analysts in Eastern Europe, which he has been doing since 2007. Over this period Dr. Sklar also lectured and supervised annually in the Belgrade Psychoanalytic Society (presently known as the Serbian Psychoanalytic Society), as well as teaching in the Moscow, Polish, Czech, Romanian, and Croatian Analytic Societies and Study Groups.
Dr. Sklar is a member of the Board of the Psychoanalytic Institution of Eastern Europe and has taught at the annual weeklong PIEE Summer School held in Montenegro over the past five years. In December 2014, he gave the keynote address at the Ukrainian Psychoanalytic Conference in Kiev on “European History, the Unconscious and Trauma”. Over the course of 2015 he will be teaching at outreach programs held in Belgrade and in Sofia.
Together with Mark Solms, Dr. Sklar set up and participated in a 10-year analytic conference program, beginning in 2005 and hosted annually in Franschoek outside Cape Town. This complemented the work undertaken by Mark and Karen Solms in South Africa, leading to the formation of the South African Study Group.
Since 2008, Dr. Sklar has been lecturing and supervising termly four groups of analysts as well as adult and child psychotherapists in Chicago. The fields examined have included Freudian theory as well as Independent thinkers - Ferenczi, Michael Balint, Enid Balint, Winnicott, Khan, and Parsons. Subjects taught have included Trauma, Regression, Psychosomatics, Psychosis, Assessment and Perversion.
Over many years, Dr. Sklar has attended and given papers at the biannual Ferenczi conference. He will be giving the keynote address at the upcoming conference due to be held in Toronto with a paper entitled ‘Revisiting “A Child is Being Beaten”: Reflections on Maternal Sadism.’ Elsewhere in North America, Dr. Sklar lectured to the Chicago PA Institute, as well as to the San Francisco Society in 2013. He will teach on Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis to the Vancouver Society in 2015.
From 2007 to 2014, Dr. Sklar has offered an annual course entitled ‘Ferenczi and Contemporary Psychoanalysis’ as part of the Psychoanalytic MSc at University College London.
Dr. Sklar is presently a candidate in the upcoming 2015 election for European Representative on the Board of the International Psychoanalytic Association.
