"Confusion and Mania: An adolescent girl's experience of disturbances in the body."

Summary: A 17 yr old adolescent girl presented with a firm conviction that she wished to change gender. The therapeutic work that followed focussed on her attempt to repair a damaged maternal body with a manic solution.

Valli Shaio Kohon trained as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic. For seven years in the late 80's and 90's she lived in Brisbane where with her husband, Gregorio Kohon, she co-founded and ran the Brisbane Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies; she organised and taught infant observation, theoretical and clinical seminars for psychologists, psychiatrists and other professionals who worked with children and young people. Upon her return to London she trained as an analyst at the Institute of Psycho-Analysis and also became a Child Analyst.

She has worked at the Anna Freud Centre as a toddler group leader, at the Portman Clinic as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, and has taught at the Anna Freud Centre, the Tavistock, IPCAPA, and the Institute. Currently she is in private practice.
