The Application of Psychoanalytic Concepts to Clinical Work with Children and Adolescents
“Can you feel what’s happening in your body right now? : Introducing a somatic focus in the psychotherapy of a young adult with Asperger”.
Inji Ralph qualified as a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist at the AFC in 1999. Afterwards, she worked in the parent-infant project (PIP) and the family support group, was a member of the training committee and consulted to local nursery schools . She has worked in the NHS and taught on a number of AFC courses including the clinical training, the MSc in psychoanalytic developmental psychology and the short courses on parent-infant mental health. She has been working in private practice in South West London for the last 24 years and has built a community of 15 clinicians at her practice in Fulham. She supervises allied professionals and trainees on the BPF training. She is a trained yoga teacher and currently completing a qualification in the trauma-conscious yoga method.
The paper will raise issues regarding technical challenges, in relation to contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy with children & adolescents such as the use of applied concepts from the Anna Freudian tradition e.g. of developmental therapy, developmental lines and attention to bodily factors. The paper will particularly focus on bodily factors and the adaptations to therapy made by working on screen. She pays close attention to the transference /counter transference relationship and the challenges (and opportunities) of the interruptions to therapeutic relationships from the pandemic.
