How Black Rage operates in the adaptation to oppression trauma
 
Black rage, a mental construct in this unique psychoanalytic formulation, functions in a dynamic equilibrium as a compromise formation in the psyche of oppressed people that can be mobilized for the purpose of defense, adaptation or psychic growth. An operational application of Kleinian theory is essential to understanding the role that Black rage plays in defending against the socially sanctioned projective attacking endured by oppressed people living in a white dominant society. Importing the construct of Black rage into the lexicon of analytic theory is crucial to constructing a foundation for a psychoanalytic theory of oppression, and the transgenerational transmission of racial trauma.
 
Dr. Stoute is a Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst. She serves as the President of the Atlanta Psychoanalytic Society, Co-Chair of the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality in the America Psychoanalytic Association, as a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute; a Child and Adolescent Supervising Analyst and a graduate of The New York Psychoanalytic Institute, and as a Fellow (Training and Supervising Analyst) of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Research and Training (IPTAR). Dr. Stoute also teaches on the faculty of the Southeast Child Analytic Consortium, the adjunct faculties of the Emory University School of Medicine, the Morehouse School of Medicine, and serves on the editorial boards of the Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, and Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. She is on the Advisory Council of the Harlem Family Institute in NY and is a member of Black Psychoanalysts Speak. Her 2017 ground-breaking paper, Race and racism in psychoanalytic thought: The ghosts in our nursery is now primary reading at psychoanalytic Institutes across the United States. Her upcoming book, co-edited with Michael Slevin, MSW, The Trauma of Racism: Lessons from the Therapeutic Encounter is due out in late 2021. In the US, she is a nationally recognized speaker, author, and consultant on issues of race, racism, diversity, with expertise in the developmental aspects of race awareness, and psychoanalytic applications in the treatment of children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and behavior problems, and is in full time private practice in Atlanta, GA.
