Margaret Rustin’s writing is characterised not only by its subject matter, which is diverse, but by her imaginative sensitivity to the emotional lives of children and young people, the depth of her understanding, and her original insights into the complexities of child and adolescent psychotherapy.　

Here a selection of her work, edited by Kate Stratton and Simon Cregeen, is brought together in a collection which focuses mainly on clinical issues and concerns: the dynamics of the interaction between patient and therapist in the consulting room; the task of assessment; the particular needs of children and young people whose early development has been distorted by trauma, loss or neglect; and the framework and skills required for effective psychoanalytic work with parents. Illustrated by vivid narratives detailing the strains and possibilities of the therapeutic encounter, this book is a record of clinical work and thinking over 50 years of psychoanalytic practice.　

It will prove essential reading for psychoanalysts and child analysts, child psychotherapists, all those training as mental health professionals in work with children and parents, and anyone with an interest in deepening their understanding of the emotional lives of children and young people.

Margaret Rustin is a child and adolescent psychotherapist and child analyst. She was head of Child Psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic 1985 – 2009 and played a major role in the extension of child psychotherapy training across the UK. Since retiring from the NHS, she has a private practice and teaches in many different countries. She has edited and written widely, most recently, jointly with her husband Michael, Reading Klein.

Kate Pugh is a Child and Adult Psychoanalyst and Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society, currently working privately. She was Consultant Psychiatrist and tutor in Psychotherapy at Central and North West London Trust from 2000 to 2021 and is now a Training and Supervising Analyst for the Institute of Psychoanalysis. Dr Pugh teaches in Universities including the Psychoanalytic Studies Msc course at UCL, as well as teaching and supervising Chinese students in Beijing. Dr Pugh also runs clinical workshops at 10WW including Seminars on Child Analysis and the Psychosomatic Workshop.

Angela Joyce is Fellow, and Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst and Child Psychoanalyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society (BPAS). She trained as a child analyst at the Anna Freud Centre, worked there for 20 years and was a founding member of the pioneering Parent-Infant Project applying psychoanalysis to working with babies and their families and jointly led the child psychotherapy service. She now works full time in private practice in London. 

She is currently Chair of the Curriculum Committee at the BPAS and a member of its Education Committee; recently past Chair of the Winnicott Trust; a Trustee of the Squiggle Foundation; and has been an Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London. 

She teaches widely and particularly in Winnicottian studies, child analysis and psychotherapy and she has published in these areas over a number of years. Amongst other publications she has edited together with Lesley Caldwell Reading Winnicott for the New Library of Psychoanalysis teaching series (2011); edited the papers from the 2015 conference Donald Winnicott and the History of the Present. Together with the Parent Infant Project team at the Anna Freud Centre she contributed to their books Claiming the Baby (2005 & 2015), Early Relational Trauma (2009), and Working with Fathers in Psychoanalytic Parent-Infant Psychotherapy (2019).

Anne Patterson is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society, retired consultant psychiatrist in psychotherapy in the NHS for 22 years, co-President of the Balint Society and editor of the New Library of Psychoanalysis. She is also the co-director of the European Psychoanalytic Film Festival and co-organiser of the monthly film club at 10 Windsor Walk.
