Maudsley Lectures in Psychoanalysis | Obesity and Bariatrics: A Psychoanalytic View
About this event
This event will be recorded and available for 7 days post lecture.
Obesity services in the NHS have experienced a shift over the past years following the introduction of newer medical treatments alongside older treatments which emphasised bariatric surgery. This final seminar will present a Psychoanalytic perspective on 7 years’ experience of working in a evolving Tier 3 Bariatric service in Leeds as a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst. A nuanced understanding of the obese patient’s dilemma in approaching clinicians for help and the need for creating a space to think about this complex psychosomatic condition with the patient will be addressed through an experience of working in the monthly Psychosomatic (PS) group based in 10 WW.
Dr Anuradha Menon is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytic Society and a Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry and Medical Psychotherapy in Leeds. She trained in Medicine and Psychiatry in India with an M.D from Mumbai before moving to the UK for further training. She has an interest in Psychosomatics and Psychoanalytic perspectives on obesity and has been a contributing member of the 10WW PS group since 2021. In her NHS role, she leads the Tier 3 Psychological service in a Specialist Bariatric service, and works in the Confidential Counselling service for Trainee Doctors and Dentists in Yorkshire (Take Time). She has a private analytic practice in Leeds.
