Professional Standards and Complaints
Ethics and professional standards
At the Institute of Psychoanalysis we take the safe care of patients and the protection of the public very seriously. Psychoanalysts are trained to the highest standard over a long period of time where respect for their patient is given paramount importance. It is essential for every psychoanalyst to maintain an attitude of truthfulness, a concern for the privacy of the patient and appropriate professional boundaries.
The British Psychoanalytical Society is a component member of the International Psychoanalytical Association and as such is bound by its procedural code.
The British Psychoanalytical Society subscribes to the ethical code and professional standards agreed by the British Psychoanalytic Council, accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
All members of the British Psychoanalytical Society who practise in the UK must register with the British Psychoanalytic Council or, if appropriate, other professional bodies like the General Medical Council or Health and Care Professions Council. Psychoanalysts practicing outside the UK are similarly required to comply with their local registering authority.
Concerns and complaints
The British Psychoanalytical Society aims to ensure that its members, clinical staff and students maintain the highest standards of professional conduct, and they are all expected to adhere to the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) Code of Ethics.
If your concern or complaint relates to any member of staff at the British Psychoanalytical Society (incorporating the Institute of Psychoanalysis), you can contact:
Chief Executive Officer
Tel: 0207 563 5005
Address: Institute of Psychoanalysis Byron House 112A Shirland Road London W9 2BT
If a complaint or concern about a member of the Society who is on the British Psychoanalytic Council Register cannot be resolved directly with him or her, you should contact:
British Psychoanalytic Council
Tel: 0207 561 9240
Address: British Psychoanalytic Council, Suite 7, 19-23 Wedmore Street London N19 4RU
If the complaint concerns a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society not registered with the BPC, the British Psychoanalytical Society Ethics and Professional Standards Committee will hear the complaint.
If the matter concerns the London Clinic of Psychoanalysis or Clinical Services North, we would recommend that in the first instance you should, wherever possible, talk about this to the person you are seeing for treatment or consultation.
However, if a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached in this way, you can contact the Head of the Adult Service in London or the Northern Service as appropriate, or Clinic Director to discuss the matter further
