Maudsley Lectures in Psychoanalysis | What comes back up: Thinking Psychoanalytically about Gut Symptoms

About this event

This event will not be recorded.

As part of the Psychosomatics Workshop talk series, this presentation will focus on disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) through a psychoanalytic lens. Bringing together experience of working with both children and adults in specialist NHS hospital settings, the talk will consider how emotional development, bodily functioning and distress may become closely entwined in gastrointestinal presentations. Without reducing symptoms to psychological causes, it may also open space for thinking about the possible significance of perinatal and early childhood experiences, as well as, possible intergenerational transmissions contributing to the meanings that bodily symptoms acquire.

The presentation will focus on cyclical vomiting syndrome, a condition marked by severe episodes of vomiting that may require hospitalisation in the absence of infection, inflammation or structural abnormality. Reflecting on clinical processes, the talk will explore what psychoanalytic approaches to psychosomatics could contribute to understanding the demands that body and mind make of each other and how the experience of the workshop has supported clinicians in thinking about this complex field where the link between emotional development and the body seems particularly relevant.
