Michael and Alice Balint arrive in England from Budapest, settling in Manchester. Alice dies suddenly a few months later. Among Michael’s trainees in Manchester are Betty Joseph and Esther Bick.

It is also the first time Anna Freud has visited her own birthplace since she and her father fled the Nazis in 1938.

Two further books on the subject will follow, though Freud dies before the third and final work is written. As a trilogy, known as The Best Interests of the Child, it goes on to have a huge impact on child welfare policy in the UK, US and beyond.
