John Bowlby is appointed a consultant by the World Health Organization, and within a few years becomes a highly influential figure in public policy on children's mental health.
A Tavistock seminar with London GPs, led by Michael Balint and Henry V. Dicks, is the first step in establishing the First Balint Group. The Group later becomes an internationally renowned model for training GPs, social workers, consultants and other health professionals.

Following the foundation of a new child therapy course four years previously, Anna Freud, Dorothy Burlingham and Helen Ross found a new centre for child psychoanalysis, called the Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic, at 12 Maresfield Gardens. It will be renamed the Anna Freud Centre after her death.

...but only for a short period. Sylvia Payne replaces him in 1954, after accepting an invitation to establish the Canadian Psychoanalytical Society.
