The Premature Infant.
In this paper, Judith Jackson describes some aspects of the severely premature baby's developing relationships and the particular difficulties that assail the infant when entering life before being fully equipped for it, requiring the physical and mechanical life-support systems provided by an intensive care unit. She explores the interrelated intrusive impact of these systems on the baby, as well as the baby's impact on parents and nursing staff.
Judith Jackson trained initially as a psychologist, then a Child Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic, then as an adult and child psychoanalyst at the Institute. She worked in a Camhs clinic for many years as a Child Psychotherapist as well as in private practice as an analyst. As a Fellow of the Society, Judith created the Foundation and Post Foundation Courses and Chaired these courses for the first 5 years of its development, she then was Chair of the Child Analysis training committee. Judiths teaches child psychoanalysis in many countries.
