The Life and Work of Lydia Tischler

About this event

Drawing on her remarkable personal and professional journey, Lydia Tischler will speak about her paper 'In the footsteps of her father: Anna Freud’s contribution to child analysis' and reflect on her own contributions to child analysis in conversation with Don Campbell and Gillian Ingall, chaired by Angela Joyce. Her story speaks powerfully to the possibility of transforming profound early trauma into a life of meaning, thought and care for others. This promises to be a moving and thoughtful evening honouring a much-loved colleague and teacher.

Refreshements will be available for in person attendees from 7:45pm, with the event formally starting at 8:15pm.

Speakers

Lydia Tischler MBE is a Child Psychotherapist, an Honorary Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society, a member of the British Psychoanalytical Association (BPA) and the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP), and an Honorary Member of the British Psychological Society. Her remarkable life story reflects the possibility of transforming suffering and trauma into understanding, compassion, and hope. As a child, she survived time in two concentration camps before later training with Anna Freud at the age of 23. Throughout her distinguished career, Lydia has become a deeply respected and much-loved colleague, teacher, and mentor to generations of therapists, recognised for both her clinical insight and humanity.

Donald Campbell is a training and supervising analyst and Distinguished Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society (BPAS). He served as President of the BPAS from 1999 to 2003 and as Secretary General of the International Psychoanalytical Association from 2003 to 2005. Alongside his private practice, he spent more than 30 years working at the Portman Clinic in London as a child, adolescent and adult psychoanalytic psychotherapist. Widely respected for his clinical insight and pluralistic approach to psychoanalysis, Campbell has written and taught extensively on subjects including aggression, violence, adolescent development, sexuality and the body. He has lectured internationally and remains a highly regarded teacher, supervisor and writer within the psychoanalytic community.

Angela Joyce is a Training and Supervising Analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society and trained as a child analyst at the Anna Freud Centre, where she helped pioneer psychoanalytic work with infants and parents and is currently jointly leading the resurgence of child psychotherapy. She is also an editor with the Winnicott Trust and is widely recognised for her scholarship on the work and legacy of Donald Winnicott. Angela’s clinical practice, teaching and writing focus on early child development, infant-parent psychotherapy and the therapeutic relationship in infancy. A highly respected teacher, supervisor and lecturer, she continues to make an important contribution to psychoanalytic education and contemporary Winnicottian thinking in the UK and internationally.

Gillian Ingall is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist who trained and worked at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust for many years before training as a Psychoanalyst with the BPS.
