As it lurches towards what has been called ‘the politics of the armed lifeboat’ the Global North prepares for an exterminism which cannot be named. Parts of the world are already becoming uninhabitable as the deepening climate crisis triggers social conflict and mass migration. Those seeking refuge on Europe’s lifeboat will be mostly black or Muslim or both. They are already receiving a hostile reception. Drawing on his new book Paradise Lost? Climate Change and the Human Condition Paul Hoggett will examine the states of mind that underlie complicity in both ecocide and genocide and some of the psycho-social resources available to us to counter this.
