The limits of individual Psychology when addressing communal conflict.
Lord John Alderdice

Chaired by Phil Stokoe

This lecture will be delivered remotely via Zoom

“The insights that emerged from psychoanalysis, resulted from the development of a method through which it was possible to explore in depth the functioning of the mind of the individual and in some cases relieve dysfunction. These findings also made possible the construction of various explanatory theories. War and violent political conflict are not individual phenomena. They occur between groups. Is it possible to develop a process that explores the psychological functioning of communities and addresses dysfunction and conflict in intercommunal relationships, and what does this mean for the development of theory and praxis at the level of such ‘large groups’?
