Fakhry Davids MSc (Clinical Psych) is a psychoanalyst in full-time clinical practice. He is a Fellow and Training Analyst of the British Psychoanalytic Society, a Member of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, a Board Member of PCCA (Partners in Confronting Collective Atrocities, www.p-cca.org), and a Member of APsaA’s Holmes Commission for Racial Equality in Psychoanalysis (Co-REAP). He holds honorary appointments in the Tavistock Clinic, the Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London and the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, Essex University. He is the author of Internal Racism: A Psychoanalytic Approach to Race and Difference (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011).

“The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to the unconscious activities of the mind.” (Freud, 1900).

Psychoanalysis would not exist if Freud had not paid attention to both his patients’ dreams and his own. It was this investigation that enabled him to construct his radically new model of the mind. Should we still take dreams seriously, or are they a distraction? Are nightmares and traumatic dreams different from those that help us think? How do psychoanalysts today listen to dreams, and how are they used in modern clinical practice?
