This talk will look closely at Melanie Klein's approach to dream analysis. It will draw particularly on her work with an adult patient, Mr B, with whom she worked from the years 1936 to 1949. Drawing on sessional notes from Mr B's analysis which include many dreams, we shall see how Klein thinks about and responds to Mr B's dreams in the light of his history and their work together.
Christine English is a child, adolescent and adult psychoanalyst in private practice in South Oxfordshire. She is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society, Archivist of the Melanie Klein Trust, and Honorary Associate Professor of the Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London. She is author of 'Melanie Klein's Narrative of an Adult Analysis', published in 2023 by Routledge.
“The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to the unconscious activities of the mind.” (Freud, 1900).
Psychoanalysis would not exist if Freud had not paid attention to both his patients’ dreams and his own. It was this investigation that enabled him to construct his radically new model of the mind. Should we still take dreams seriously, or are they a distraction? Are nightmares and traumatic dreams different from those that help us think? How do psychoanalysts today listen to dreams, and how are they used in modern clinical practice?
