Marching Under the Banner of the Superego: Notes on ‘the Mania for Reproaching
Prof Don Carveth

This lecture will be delivered remotely via Zoom

Chaired by David Morgan

As early as the late 1950s psychoanalysts such as Sandler in England and Arlow in America were reporting a general loss of interest among analysts in the dynamics of guilt and the super ego. In the late 1990s Wurmser referred to the superego as “the sleeping giant“ of contemporary psychoanalysis.” This turning away from the superego and conscience in psychoanalysis parallelled the attack on regulation and regulators in neoliberal capitalism and “the culture of narcissism.” Today we see both the evasion of the superego and its hypertrophy. One of the most effective defences against the sadistic superego is identification with it and the infliction of guilt upon scapegoats, a process we see in what Racker called “the mania for reproaching.” Woke“ liberals are often incapacitated in the face of the authoritarianism of social justice warriors marching “under the banner of the superego.”
