People with psychotic illness tend to die up to 20 years younger than the rest of the population, in the vast majority of cases from physical illness. Evidence is growing that this involves a wide range of illnesses, and the process starts even before a patient’s psychosis is diagnosed. Drawing on some key ideas from the French school of psychosomatics, we will consider whether these concepts help us understand more about the somatic breakdown experienced by these individuals, and how this might inform our clinical practice.

Chaired by Simon Harrison and Emma Hotopf

Ed Beveridge trained in medicine at Cambridge and Oxford universities, and undertook specialist psychiatric training in North London. He has been a general adult psychiatrist for over 20 years, currently working in a community psychosis team in Camden.

He has interests in improving the quality and safety of healthcare, and in medical education. He has a particular interest in improving the physical health of people living with psychosis, both at the level of the individual patient and of the population. He has worked on a number of initiatives and projects around this clinical topic in the London region and beyond. He has also held lead roles in NHS organisations focused on this area.

He undertook training analysis in London and trained as a psychosomatician at IPSO in Paris. He is a member of the Association Internationale de Psychosomatique Pierre Marty.

Dr Robert Harland is a general adult psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He trained at the Maudsley. He has worked as a consultant mainly in community and inpatient services since 2008. He is the Clinical Director of the Psychosis Clinical Academic Group (Kings Health Partners) and the Clinical Director for Lambeth Adult Mental Health. He is the Trust Caldicott Guardian.  He is a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society, a Trustee of the Maudsley Philosophy Group Charitable Trust, and a Director of the South London Centre of Psychoanalysis at 10 Windsor Walk.
