This paper explores the theme of loyalty and infidelity in relation to love, pain of loss and mourning processes in Dante’s psychic journey of recovery from the loss of his beloved Beatrice and from the pain of exile. In the presentation, I will show the links between Dante’s poetic experience of his journey with the experience of mourning of a patient in analysis who in her youth had given her baby away for adoption.

Giovanna Di Ceglie qualified in Medicine and specialized in Psychiatry at the University of Perugia (ITALY). She is a training analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society. She has published papers on the development of symbolic thinking and on the processes of orientation/disorientation in infant development and on identity development.
