Join us for the next instalment of our Political Mind series, featuring a dialogue with Giuseppe Caruso and Professor Bob Hinshelwood.

The social sciences and psychology approach human experience from different directions: society’s demands versus the individual’s inner world. Politicians often follow social science perspectives, overlooking unconscious influences, while psychoanalysis focuses on the unconscious but can neglect social, economic, and historical complexity. Yet both are essential to understanding humanity.

Human beings shape society, just as society shapes individuals, meaning both perspectives must inform one another. Hinshelwood brings these approaches together through a psychosocial model grounded in observation, using psychoanalysis to balance the objectivity of social science.

At a time of global crisis, understanding how social forces and unconscious dynamics intersect is crucial. Hinshelwood highlights a long-term process of dehumanisation, growing alienation, and the merging of human value with economic value. By applying psychoanalytic insight to society and capitalism, he offers a new way of understanding - and potentially addressing - these deep-rooted fractures.
