Learning to Live and to Die: Doubt and Certainty in Working with a Terminally Ill Young Adolescent Patient.
In this paper, which explores work that took place more than two decades ago, Gillian Ingall considers the powerful feelings of doubt and certainty that she felt as a relatively newly qualified Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist whilst working with a terminally ill young adolescent patient.
Faced with a terminal illness and one which had already left her patient an orphan, her lively manner seemed to believe the huge losses she had and was to face in her short life. In contrast, a profound doubt filled her as to what Gillian could possibly offer her, faced with such overwhelming challenges.
Gillian shall also briefly consider doubt and certainty as they have appeared in work with other children and adolescents.
Gillian Ingall is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist who trained and worked at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust for many years before training as a Psychoanalyst with the BPS. She works in private practice in London and Canterbury.
