The Edinburgh Conference on 27th April 2024 is the first International Conference the British Psychoanalytical Society (BPAS) and Institute of Psychoanalysis are hosting in person outside of London. This is an in-person conference which we hope will encourage participants to forge new links with psychoanalysts and psychotherapists working with adults and children and those interested in this topic from the UK and abroad. The topic of The Dynamics of Influence, as seen from the perspective of the psychoanalytic clinical setting, is of increasing interest in our contemporary life, both inside and outside the consulting room. The three key note speakers, Michael Feldman, Rosemary Davies and Mary Short each bring fresh insights into the wider understanding of the conscious and unconscious elements of how and what influences our interactions with others.

The choice of the City of Edinburgh brings together historical connections that Scotland has to the BPAS to the present day. Deciding to host this conference in Edinburgh is a testament to the more recent successful expansion of training opportunities with the British Psychoanalytic Society in major centres outside of London, particularly in the North of England and in Scotland.  Vic Sedlak, the current President of the BPAS, was particularly pioneering in establishing training opportunities outside of London over the last thirty years and, among other dedicated analysts, making psychoanalysis more available to a wider population and he will be the overall chair of the meeting.
