Brian Martindale works in the North East of England. He is a BPAS psychoanalyst in private practice and also a member of the North of England Association for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.  He is now retired as a psychiatrist. He is past chair of ISPS (International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis) www.isps.org and founding editor of the ISPS book series. He co-founded the European Federation of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (EFPP) www.efpp.org. He has represented the Western European Zone to the World Psychiatric Association. He worked in London for many years as a medical psychotherapist. After moving to the northeast of England in 2005, he gained considerable clinical experience as a psychiatrist in an NHS Early Intervention in Psychosis (developing his psychoanalytic ideas about psychosis). He has published in several areas besides psychosis and lectures widely nationally and internationally.

This series of seminars will focus on the various forms of psychosis encountered in clinical practice in the National Health Service. It will take an individualised approach, considering the specific aspects of reality that a particular person cannot bear and the various psychological processes that transform and create a ‘new reality’ or ‘new realities’.

The seminars will bring plenty of ‘ordinary’ NHS examples and focus on the consequences and potential impact of psychotic processes on staff and carers, which have implications for the kind of care provided.

The final seminar will focus on psychotherapeutic work with a family over a two year period, illustrating the possibilities of integrating psychoanalytic perspectives into ‘ordinary’ mental health services.

The lecture section will be recorded and available for 1 week, this does not include the discussion.
