This dialogue will explore the psychological motivations for kidney donations, the role of the renal transplant team, and whether we can ever have a satisfactory framework for altruistic kidney donations.

Chaired by Simon Harrison and Emma Hotopf

Alastair Santhouse is a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at The Maudlsey Hospital, London. For a time, he considered a career as a physician, gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians, before eventually seeing the light. He entered psychiatry training at The Maudsley Hospital in 1996, and has worked there ever since. For almost 20 years, he worked in Liaison Psychiatry at Guy’s Hospital and the Persistent Physical Symptoms Unit at The Maudsley, before his current post in Neuropsychiatry. He is past president of the psychiatry council at the Royal Society of Medicine, and former Vice Chair of the Faculty of Liaison Psychiatry at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. His first book, Head First: A Psychiatrist's Stories of Mind and Body, was published last year.

Dr Kate Pugh is a Child and Adult Psychoanalyst and Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society, currently working privately. She was Consultant Psychiatrist and tutor in Psychotherapy at Central and North West London Trust from 2000 to 2021 and is now a Training and Supervising Analyst for the Institute of Psychoanalysis. Dr Pugh teaches in Universities including the Psychoanalytic Studies Msc course at UCL, as well as teaching and supervising Chinese students in Beijing. Dr Pugh also runs clinical workshops at 10WW including Seminars on Child Analysis and the Psychosomatic Workshop.
