Kurt Weill’s 1947 opera Street Scene is the inspiration for this event where we take a closer look at the themes of dreams and disillusionment which preoccupy the opera’s characters over one hot summer’s day and night in a New York boarding house and the street outside. They in part represent the American dream, coming from different countries and backgrounds, of different ages and genders with dreams and ambitions for success and happiness and relief from the pain, the poverty, and frustrations of their lives. These longings and struggles are also at the heart of the human condition with which psychoanalysis concerns itself; investigating how the conflicts between love and hate, and hope and despair, affect our capacity to thrive and develop.

With presentations from a musical and a psychoanalytic perspective, sung excerpts from Opera North’s Street Scene and discussions amongst presenters and the audience, this event should offer an enlivening experience for anyone, well versed in opera and psychoanalysis or new to them both.

This is a Summer School Projects event - a collaboration between Opera North and the Institute of Psychoanalysis supported by the European Psychoanalytical Federation.
