 is seminar examines the devastating bombing of Dre
 sden at the end of the Second World War in relatio
 n to contemporary forms of violence. Using music a
 s a lens\, it explores the psychic dimensions of v
 iolence\, including the role of sadomasochism in s
 ustaining totalitarian regimes\, with reference to
  current global conflicts.</p>\n \n <p>Drawing on 
 Winnicott’s concept of holding\, the discussion co
 nsiders themes of care and its absence through cul
 tural and musical works\, including Schubert and S
 hostakovich\, whose compositions reflect life unde
 r political terror. The seminar also addresses the
  limits of representation in the face of extreme t
 rauma\, such as Auschwitz.</p>\n \n <p>Finally\, i
 t reflects on the relevance of these questions tod
 ay\, in the context of climate crisis\, rising aut
 horitarianism\, and social fragmentation\, with pa
 rticular attention to their impact on adolescents\
 , and asks what psychoanalysis can offer in respon

 Sklar is an Independent Training Analyst of the Br
 itish Psychoanalytical Society (BPAS) and a psycho
 analyst in private practice since 1984. He is a fo
 rmer Consultant Psychotherapist and Head of Depart
 ment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital\, Cambridge.</p>\n 
 \n <p>He has held a number of senior international
  roles\, including Vice President of the European 
 Psychoanalytic Federation and Board Member of the 
 International Psychoanalytical Association. He has
  taught widely for many years\, particularly in Ea
 stern Europe\, as well as in Chicago and South Afr
 ica.</p>\n \n <p>Jonothan Sklar is the author of s
