 stalment of our Political Mind series\, with speak
 er David Bell.</p>\n \n <p>This paper uses “preten
 der” in both its familiar sense - what imitates kn
 owledge - and its older sense\, as in a “pretender
  to the throne”: that which seeks to usurp knowled
 ge and replace it with substitutes.</p>\n \n <p>It
  examines how thought-provoking ideas are subtly t
 ransformed as their offspring harden into dogma\, 
 ritual\, religiosity\, and moralism\, displacing r
 eflective understanding with the mere accumulation
  of facts.</p>\n \n <p>Cultures develop their own 
 modes of self-explanation\, but like symptoms\, th
 ese conceal as much as they reveal. Psychoanalysis
  is thus well placed to engage critically with the
  forms of consciousness that shape our age. The id
 eology of the market\, for example\, has so permea
 ted social consciousness that it appears as “norma
 l.” This chapter\, in a longstanding psychoanalyti
 c tradition\, problematises that apparent normalit
 y. It explores the forms of subjectivity it produc
 es and sustains\, with reflections on socio-econom
 ic crisis\, welfare\, the psychological effects of
  rising inequality\, and an archaic tendency towar
 d moralised binaries. In doing so\, it shows how\,
  under this ideology\, knowledge of the world is d
 isplaced by its various “pretenders.”</p>\n \n <hr
