 es\, with speaker Professor Michael Rustin and cha
 ir Guiseppe Caruso. </p>\n \n <p>This talk conside
 rs whether a psychoanalytic perspective can help u
 s understand the current disordered and alarming s
 tate of international relations\, including the ri
 sk that ongoing conflicts could escalate into wide
 r or even nuclear war. It reflects on how nations 
 and governments have arrived at such a point of ex
 treme danger.</p>\n \n <p>While “realist” theories
  suggest that states act rationally to maximise po
 wer and maintain balance\, history shows that inte
 rnational laws and agreements—often formed after m
 ajor crises—have only partially succeeded in limit
 ing conflict. In recent years\, these regulatory n
 orms appear to have significantly weakened.</p>\n 
 \n <p>The presentation explores why aggression\, w
 ar crimes\, and genocide have become more prevalen
 t\, and why public responses to such events are of
 ten muted. It aims to open up deeper questions abo
 ut the psychological and social forces shaping glo
 bal instability today.</p>\n \n <hr />\n <p>Michae
 l Rustin is a sociologist who has written widely o
 n psychosocial and psychoanalytical issues\, since
  the publication of his<em> The Good Society and t
 he Inner World</em> in 1991. He is an Associate of
  the British Psychoanalytical  Society\, and has c
 ontributed frequently to its<em> Political Mind</e
 m> series. He is currently writing a book on Objec
 t-Relations Psychoanalysis and Social Democracy. <
