Th ere&rsquo\;s something fundamentally different to working in physical medicine. We&rsquo\;re not dea ling with patients who &ldquo\;have&rdquo\; an ill ness\, but with people whose difficulties are cent ral to their personality\, their emotional experie nce and their ways of relating. In working with th em\, we get deeply affected and we might get embro iled in ways that make things worse. Relationships are central to the work. If we understand what ha ppens between our patients and us\, in ourselves\, and between staff\, we can be of much more help t o them. Psycho-analysis offers such ways of unders tanding\, and this is what this course aims to do. \n \n \n \n \n Marcus Evans \;is a \;Fell ow of the British Psychoanalytical Society-with a long-standing interest in applying psychoanalytic thinking in mental health settings.
