DESCRIPTION:\n \n \n &ldquo\;Beyond Reason - steps towards a n ew Enlightenment&rdquo\;.\n \n Lord John Alderdice \n \n Chaired by David Morgan\n \n Tuesday 1st Apr il 2025\n 8:15pm - 9.45pm (BST)\n \n Online via zo om\n Recording available for 1 week\n \n Disruptiv e new technology\, deep anger about corruption and unfairness\, and disdain for the quality of socio political leadership\, have led some to challenge the thinking of our times. \;Our old forms of understanding and ordering society are dissolving for reasons that are not so different from those o f half a millennium ago. There is however one dist inct difference. At that time\, the radicals had a clear idea of the alternative they were promoting . \;Enlightenment thinkers demanded democracy instead of authoritarianism\, the law guided by a moral code\, and education and science replacing o bscurantist forms of religious authority. \;Bu t in our day democracy is failing\, international law is dissolving before our eyes\, and science is no longer regarded with the same respect. We need a new paradigm\, but what might it look like?&nbs p\;This is the challenge that Lord John Alderdice will address.\n \n \n Lord John Alderdice has an a cademic and professional background in medicine\, psychiatry\, and psychoanalysis. He was a consulta nt psychiatrist and Senior Lecturer at The Queen&r squo\;s University of Belfast where he established the Centre for Psychotherapy with various degree courses\, research work and clinical services. He also devoted himself to understanding and addressi ng religious fundamentalism and long-standing viol ent political conflict\, initially in Ireland\, an d then in various other parts of the world. This c ommitment took him into politics\, and he was elec ted Leader of Northern Ireland&rsquo\;s Alliance P arty from 1987 to 1998\, playing a significant rol e in the negotiation of the 1998 Belfast/Good Frid ay Agreement. When the new Northern Ireland Assemb ly was elected\, he became its first Speaker. In 2 004 he retired from the Assembly on being appointe d by the British and Irish Governments as one of t he four members of the Independent Monitoring Comm ission (IMC)\, appointed to close down the operati ons of the paramilitary organizations (2003-2011) and he continued with this work on security issues when he and two colleagues were commissioned by t he new Northern Ireland Government to produce a re port advising them on strategy for disbanding the remaining paramilitary groups (2016).\n \n Having been appointed to House of Lords in 1996 he was el ected Convenor of the Liberal Democrats for the fi rst four years of the Liberal/Conservative Coaliti on Government from 2010 to 2014. His international interests had previously led to his election as P resident of Liberal International\, the global net work of some 100 liberal political parties and org anizations. He served from 2005 to 2009 and remain s an active Presidente D&rsquo\;Honneur.\n \n He i s the founding Director of the Conference on the R esolution of Intractable Conflict\, based in Oxfor d and with colleagues in Belfast he also establish ed the Centre for Democracy and Peace Building whi ch continues work on the implementation of the pri nciples of the Good Friday Agreement and takes the lessons of the Irish Peace Process to other commu nities in conflict. More recently he set up The Co ncord Foundation with a wider remit in understandi ng and addressing the nature of violent political conflict and its resolution.
