Black \n \n Discussant: Dr Michael Parsons  \;\n \n Chair: Phil Stokoe\n \n Tuesday 17th September 2024\n 8:15pm - 10pm BST\n \n These disc ussions \;will be delivered remotely via Zoom. \n Recording available for 1 week\n The philosophe r Emmanuel Levinas described his understanding of religion in one of his main works\, Totality and I nfinity (1961). In this paper I attempt to underst and his account and to compare it with Freud'\; s picture of religion in The Future of an Illusion (1927). Freud'\;s account\, like that of most subsequent psychoanalytic theorists\, emphasises t he role of religious objects\; these are notably a bsent from Levinas'\;s account. \;The paper goes on to consider the significance of this abse nce. \; It suggests that Levinas'\;s accoun t opens up a way to perceive the true importance r eligions may have\, in the life of the individual and in society more widely\, which is hard to reco gnise\, and may indeed be obscured\, when the emph asis is on their objects.\n \n  \;\n \n David M.
